A Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code is a 4-digit number that classifies occupations into job types and related job titles. The SOC codes are used to identify the relevant going rate and salary threshold for each job, along with the relative level of skill required to perform it successfully. Knowing what SOC code to choose when you’re hiring workers can help you save money on recruiting, increase productivity, and avoid dealing with bureaucratic red tape if your workers need special permissions to be in your country or state. Here’s how to choose the right SOC code as part of your business hiring process.

What does SOC code mean?

A Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code is a 4-digit number that classifies occupations into job types and related job titles. The SOC codes are used to identify the relevant going rate and salary threshold for each job, as well as other data such as how many people are currently employed in that occupation.  Choosing the right SOC code depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to use it to make comparisons between occupations, then the highest level of detail should be used so that you can have an accurate picture of different jobs’ salaries and experience requirements.

The correct SOC code must be allocated when hiring a migrant under the Skilled Worker program or the Global Business Mobility program. This role, for example, meets the minimum salary threshold and is skilled at the required level.

How to find the right SOC code for migrants?

You can also look up your occupation by its Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Code. The SOC is an identification tool that classifies occupations into job types and related job titles. The codes are used in a variety of contexts, including determining whether a person is an employee or self-employed, identifying the relevant going rate and salary threshold for each job, and assessing what type of training may be required for a position.

Different ways you can use these classification codes.

There are four different ways in which you can use SOC codes. First, they can be used to find out what the going rate is for a certain occupation. Second, they can be used to identify who is eligible for certain jobs that are not publicly posted. Third, they can be used to identify what specific skills and education is required for a job. Finally,  the SOC code is the first thing employers will look at when screening applicants for a position. As such, it’s crucial to make sure that your skills match up with those required by an employer if you want them to consider hiring you.

Using the wrong SOC code

Choosing the wrong SOC code can lead to erroneous information and misleading salaries. For example, if you are a social media manager and use an accountant’s SOC code (13-2011) you will find that your salary is much less than it should be. When choosing a SOC for your profession, it is important that you look at which occupations most closely align with your line of work. The occupation classification is what leads to data and accurate salaries.

When a visa application is denied because the correct Standard Occupation Classification code isn’t selected, the applicant will need to reapply with the correct code and re-pay the Immigration Skills Charge, the Immigration Health Surcharge, and the UKVI fee.

A misclassification can also cause problems with calculating benefit entitlements such as pension contributions or maternity pay. It is worth taking the time to make sure you choose the right SOC code before submitting your application as it could save significant amounts of money and stress in the long run.

Where do I find UK Skilled Workers Eligible Occupation Codes?

In order to find a UK Skilled Worker Eligible Occupation Codes,  you can use the occupation codes list available on gov.uk . The lists are organised in the order of job type and related job titles, including their respective Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes. You may have to narrow your search by job type and then scroll down the page for a full list of relevant occupations by SOC code. A job applicant with the wrong occupation code can find himself or herself facing a series of issues at the Home Office. In either case, you will be affected by the same implications, regardless of whether you are sponsoring from within the UK or overseas.

The Home Office can deny an employee’s visa application if issues with the SOC code are discovered during the visa application process.

How does the Home Office investigate SOC codes?

To ensure the correct code has been selected and the correct fees have been paid, the caseworker at the Home Office can review the job title, job description, and SOC code. They can, however, investigate the codes provided in the visa application by looking at certain information, such as :

– Does the CoS match the description of the role in question?

– What is the minimum salary threshold for the stated salary?

– Has the right skill code been put on for this occupation to indicate a required skill level?

Caseworkers have access to the Sponsor Management System (SMS) and can check against the information given on the visa application form and the assigned CoS. They can also request to review documents such as the individual’s employment contract and job description and can also interview the sponsored individual to verify the actual responsibilities of the job.
