Job Description

Do you have experience in policy? Are you passionate about driving change in government, promoting the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) mission to fund life-saving science, and advocating for the 7 million people living in the UK with a heart and circulatory disease?

If so, you may be the Policy Officer (Prevention) we need!

About the role

The BHF Policy and Public Affairs team exists to build support amongst decision makers so we can address key issues relevant to cardiovascular research, health and care, public health, and the wider charity environment.

As Policy Officer (Prevention), you’ll work with fellow members of the policy team to help shape our work across issues including obesity and diet, tobacco and the wider public health system.

You’ll be involved in researching and drafting new policy positions, proactively identifying gaps and opportunities, and leading programmes of work to help us develop new policy. This role will work closely with colleagues in Public Affairs and Communications to drive change based on policy positions.

Working arrangements

This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and our London Office.

The use of our office spaces is driven in part by your role and the activities you need to do. This may vary from time to time, so you must be prepared to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause. Most of our colleagues on blended contracts can expect to spend some time in their office each week, on average.

About you

With an excellent technical grasp of your policy portfolio, you will be looking to continually develop the portfolio further. You’ll also have relevant stakeholder engagement experience and be able to identify other partners within/outside the sector to engage with to drive change.

Ideally, you’ll have previous experience of healthcare or public health policy, as well as a good knowledge of the drivers of cardiovascular disease, and be committed to reducing inequalities in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors.

You will also have:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • The ability to take a flexible approach to work within a matrixed team
  • A strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Confidence to build influential relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of at least one of the following:public health, cardiovascular disease and/ or public policy interventions- design, evaluation and implementation

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy, Igniting Change, along with our internal EDI group, Kaleidoscope, and a growing number of employee network groups (our Affinity Groups), help us create an environment where all our colleagues and volunteers can succeed.

What can we offer you

As an organisation we’re open to flexible working arrangements. In return we offer a generous holiday allowance, an excellent working environment and a welcoming supportive group of colleagues.
