Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and enthusiastic immunologist to join Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT). The role is based at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) but with the opportunity to work across the MFT immunology and allergy services at both MRI and Wythenshawe Hospital and at Salford Royal Hospital (part of Northern Care Alliance – NCA).
The post is advertised as an individual post but there are discussions between MFT and NCA on joint recruitment. GM offers excellent opportunities for potential applicants. The two immunology services provide care for all the patients in GM and beyond. The services also have close ties to the Allergy service at Wythenshawe Hospital, the paediatric immunology and allergy service in the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine in St Mary’s Hospital and the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation in the University of Manchester. The clinical services are supported by the GM Immunology Service (GMIS) which provides laboratory immunology services for Greater Manchester and beyond.

The successful applicant will have responsibilities for both Diagnostic Immunopathology and Clinical Immunology, and clinical activities will include Allergy and Primary Immunodeficiency. This post is a new post to cover expansion and increasing demands on the immunology service linked to immunoglobulin stewardship, drug allergy, secondary immunodeficiency and growth in the laboratory service, as well as the increased demand for clinical allergy assessment.
The post holder will be expected, in conjunction with the present consultants across MFT, to further develop the Immunology and Allergy Services for the Trust and develop close links with other clinical and laboratory groups in the Northwest of England.
The post holder will share the responsibility for providing a consultant led Diagnostic Immunopathology service. The laboratory currently provides tests for several NHS Trusts across the Northwest of England. Day to day tasks include demand management, quality assurance, providing interpretive comments and related liaison work. The post holder will be expected to participate in quality / clinical governance processes, such as maintenance of ISO 15189 accreditation.
