Types of UK Family Visas

If you are moving to the UK to join your family, you will need to apply for a Family Visa. The most common Family Visa is the Spouse Visa, which allows partners of British or settled persons to live in the UK. To be eligible, you must prove your relationship, meet financial requirements, and have adequate accommodation. Below is a list of Family Visas that allow loved ones to reunite in the UK:

Allows a non-UK partner to join their British or settled spouse in the UK. Requires proof of relationship, financial stability, and English proficiency. Grants initial stay of 2.5 years, extendable towards settlement.

For those already in the UK on a Spouse Visa who want to extend their stay. Requires meeting financial, relationship, and residency conditions again. Usually granted for another 2.5 years, leading to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Happens if financial, relationship, or eligibility requirements aren’t met. Can appeal, reapply with stronger evidence, or seek a judicial review. Acting quickly with expert guidance improves chances of success.

If a marriage ends, the UK Spouse Visa may be shortened or canceled. The visa holder must switch to another visa or leave the UK. Some may qualify for ILR or a different visa, depending on circumstances.

Allows a non-UK partner to enter the UK to marry their British or settled fiancé(e). Valid for six months, during which the couple must marry. After marriage, the applicant can switch to a Spouse Visa.

For long-term partners of British or settled individuals who aren’t married. Requires proof of at least two years of cohabitation and a genuine relationship. Grants 2.5 years of stay, extendable towards ILR.

For same-sex or opposite-sex partners in a registered civil partnership with a UK citizen or settled person. Follows the same rules as the Spouse Visa. Leads to permanent settlement after meeting residency requirements.

Allows children of UK visa holders or settled persons to join or stay with their parents in the UK. Child must be under 18 and financially supported without public funds. Leads to settlement if parents qualify.

For family members of Skilled Worker Visa holders, allowing them to live, work, and study in the UK. Requires proof of relationship and financial support. Can lead to settlement alongside the main visa holder.

When is the best time to start a visa application to the United Kingdom?

The best time to apply for a visa to the United Kingdom generally depends on the type of visa, the applicant’s circumstances, and current processing times. As a general rule, the UK government advises applicants to start their visa process 3 months before their intended travel date.
